GCF Volunteers 1983-2013

Stelios Michaelidis
(March 10, 1937 – September 30, 1994)

As GCF acknowledges the benevolent actions of all its volunteers, the committee, as well as the Matthews family, would also like to pay special tribute to Stelios Michaelides.

Stelios was a founding member of the Greek Children’s Fund and served as the organization’s Treasurer until his untimely death in 1994.

Driven by love and devotion he dedcated countless hours of his time to GCF. He worked side by side with Stanley Matthews, and together, they established GCF at MSKCC. The love, hope and inspiration he gave children and families GCF assisted cannot be conveyed in words. Many of the GCF families he helped continue to remember him and remain grateful for his assistance. One patient in particular is Elpida Hatzivasileiou. Stelios and his wife, Ismini, opened both their hearts and lives to Elpida during her stay in New York, whereshe was treated for leukemia.

In addition to his wonderful work with GCF, Stelios was very active in the Cypriot community in New York. He actively helped children from Cyprus come to the U.S. for medical treatment. He also assisted young adults from Cyprus pursue their undergraduate studies in New York. Given his dedication to helping others, it is no wonder Stelios was widely known for his big heart and his generosity toward others. His life reflects his ongoing effort to help people with financial need, especially children and students.

Stelios was a very special individual who remains in the hearts of all GCF members who knew him and worked with him. The GCF committee posthumously honored Stelios for his accomplishment by dedicating the 1994 journal book to his memory.

May his memory be eternal.
